If you are importing from China and your goods arrived into Felixstowe last week there is a good chance that they were a board the worlds largest container ship, the Majestic Maersk. Felixstowe now has the honour of being the first UK port to handle the Majestic Maersk, which is an Ultra Large Container Ship (ULCS) with a capacity of 18,000 teu. This vessel is part of a new influx of Ultra vessels that will become more and more visible on our sea’s, as shipping companies are seeing the financial sense to run these larger ships against the smaller vessels in their fleets.
Felixstowe is currently the largest container port in the UK, and due to the fact it has the closet geographical location to the main ports in Northern Europe along with being in close proximity to the North Sea, make it a perfect calling for shipping companies coming into the UK. This is ideal if you are importing from China, as the location of Felixstowe means shipping companies can make the routing more effective thus giving a saving for companies that are importing from China.
As a company if you are importing from China, last week really showed the port of Felixstowe’s capability to service all types of vessels and to comfortably service them at the same time. The port had a call of MSC Capella which has a capacity of 13,000 teu, Cosco England 13,400 teu, MSC Gaia with a capacity of 14,000 teu and the Majestic Maersk already mentioned – last week really demonstrated that Felixstowe is becoming one of the major ports in the world.
