The battle for business from shipping companies and freight forwarders has intensified recently with UK ports, since the confirmation that DP world’s new deep sea terminal in Stanford-le-Hope is die to open in 2013 fourth quarter.
DP world have pitched the new terminal to shipping companies and freight forwarders that due to it’s central locations, which is only 25 miles from the centre of London, is going to be a much more cost effective routing that that of the current number one port in the UK Felixstowe.
It is going to take time for DP world to attract a constant flow of business away from Felixstowe, who being the number one port in the UK handle the majority of business whether that be directly from shipping companies or the consolidation from freight forwarders.
This being said DP world has made a initial impact with the signing of the new contract with SAECS (South Africa Europe Container Service) will move all their services to Tilbury from November onwards. Another large coupe for DP world is the confirmation that Marks & Spencer’s are to invest a projected $300 million into a new distribution centre located within the ports vicinity.
In a counter argument to all the press hype behind DP world and the new contract signings, Felixstowe have reported that shipping into Felixstowe will still be a more cost effective option for shipping companies and freight forwarders. The study that was undertaken by MDS Transmodal reports that is will still be having a overall cheaper cost if brought into Felixstowe rather than DP worlds London gateway.
Until the new service of the DP world is fully operational and more shipping companies come on board it is hard to say which routing will be the most cost and time effective. Eclipse Worldwide however guarantee as your freight forwarder as the service becomes available and we are confident of the service being offered, we will give you all the options for your import goods as to which service best suits your requirements.
